We found a flippin’ flagship at the Oppo Find N2 Flip 5G launch

Yesterday, 30 March, Oppo held the South African launch for its latest flagship, the Find N2 Flip 5G. It joins the relatively small stable of foldable devices available in the country. Oppo isn’t on most radars for its foldable devices but it’s hoping to change that with the Find N2 Flip.

Oppo has pulled out all the stops with the Find N2 Flip 5G. This foldable features a 6.8in foldable AMOLED LPTO display with a 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10 support, and a claimed peak brightness of 1,600 nits.

The main attraction of the device is the second screen when the phone is folded in half. The 3.26in vertical display is currently the largest cover display on a foldable smartphone (with this orientation). The screen gives you everything you’ll need at a glance like time, weather, and access to the camera. And if the flip phone wasn’t enough of a throwback, how about a Tamagochi-esque virtual pet for the always-on display?

With every flip phone, there’s always the worry of the dreaded screen crease that tends to crop up after a while. Oppo has used a waterdrop design for the hinges and promises 400,000 folds with “better crease control than alternatives”.

Oppo also seemed pleased to punt its partnership with Swedish camera manufacturer Hasselblad to bolster camera quality. The three sensors are spearheaded by a 50MP main camera (f/1.8 that also doubles as a selfie cam when flipped closed, a callback to the Find N1’s flippable camera from 2013. Below the main sensor, you’ll find (hehe) an 8MP ultra-wide autofocus-lacking sensor (f/2.2). A 32MP front camera (f/2.4) rounds out the trio. Vloggers will be happy to hear that the Find N2 Flip’s capabilities include 4K@30fps, 1080@60fps/30fps, and 720P@60fps if you prefer quantity over quality.

The phone is powered by a 4,300mAh battery and features 44W fast charging support. According to Oppo, 23 minutes of charging will get your phone to 50%, which is always welcome. 8GB of RAM isn’t the 12GB we saw in the Reno 8 Pro but should handle what you throw at it. 256GB of storage is also a welcome sight for all the high-res selfies you’ll be taking.

Crack it open and you’ll find a Dimensity 9000+ chipset powering everything. This chipset is supposed to be quite capable and can even outperform the previous Qualcomm flagship Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 in some cases but we’ll need to spend a bit more time with it to see how it fares here. The Find N2 Flip is running Oppo’s ColorOS 13 (based on Android 13) and features all the Google Mobile Services you could need, which shouldn’t be taken for granted.

The 8GB/256GB model of the Oppo Find N2 Flip is available for R29,000 or from R1,200p/m at all local network providers. Oppo is also leveraging its brand partnerships to sweeten your purchase. Some Find N2 Flip boxes will be designed by Rich Mnisi and buying one will stand you the chance to win two tickets to the UEFA Champions League final in Istanbul in June.
