Vodacom is the latest provider to announce price hikes

Vodacom price increases

Dread it. Run from it. Vodacom’s price hikes will arrive all the same. Following in the footsteps of its competitors, Vodacom has announced that it will be increasing subscription prices across a number of Red tariff plans from 1 April 2023.

The company’s excuse for the increases will sound familiar to those aware of the MTN and Telkom increases. The company cites “increased battery theft, base station vandalism and a difficult economic climate with inflation, exchange rate pressures and intensified load shedding” as the reasons for charging its customers more this year.

Don’t fret, Vodacom customers. Despite the hikes, Vodacom remains “committed to keeping our prices as low as possible.” Whew. That’s a load off our minds.

Feeling like the Department of Energy

It’s worth mentioning that this won’t affect your overall bill. The increases are targeted towards all contract and month-to-month tariff plans, with an average increase of 6.7% incoming. Any other value-added services and handset financials will not be affected.

All affected customers should have already received an SMS notifying them of the change with a link to the list of price hikes. If you haven’t, you should probably check on that. The SMS also mentions that the plans affected by the increase will get an additional 20% anytime data per month. So at least there’s that.

Customers that took on any of these plans between January and March 2023 would receive a three-month grace period where the price hikes are concerned. This means that these customers won’t have to feel the sting of the hikes until 1 June 2023. The provider also said that a discount, applied at its “own discretion” would be added for these customers.

You can find the full list of affected Red plans right here. If you’re the forgetful type, there are plenty of ways to remind yourself which contract you’re on. First, try the MyVodacom app. If that’s not an option, try logging into Vodacom’s website. And there’s always the *135# USSD code. Find the ‘services‘ option and then the ‘My Price Plan‘ option.
