Swedish (technically) auto brand Volvo has plans to launch six new EV models before 2026, according to a new report. Five of these vehicles, three sedans and two SUVs, are destined for international markets. The sixth, a luxury electric van, is slated for launch in the Asian market.
The move is unsurprising in at least one way. Volvo may be nominally Swedish but it’s mostly owned by Chinese automaker Geely. Vans are generally popular in the region and the company is looking to drive EV adoption in that particular market.
Electrifying Volvo
The first of these vehicles, the company’s EX90 SUV, has already been unveiled. It’s coming to market with features beyond just electric motors instead of combustion. It’ll also include interior radar which will have a variety of uses. Details about the other four vehicles are still under wraps for the present.
The fifth, the electric van destined for Asia, is apparently based on a car called the Zeekr 009. Since Volvo and Geely share technology, having input from the Swedish manufacturer makes sense.
As for the other vehicles, research and development have reportedly moved to Shanghai. The team there tripled recently, necessitating a move to larger offices. The automaker, like several other manufacturers, has set its sights on having all of its vehicles being EVs by 2030. Time will tell if it (or anyone else) actually manages it but they’re certainly giving it a shot.
