The story behind the industry’s first Solo Cut Vlog mode of the HONOR 70 5G

Vlogging has grown rapidly in the region over the past two years and become increasingly popular among users of all ages. People can post videos of themselves or any interesting subject and talk about their experiences or even use them as a means to share new performance art or music they have created with viewers and fans that watch and support their vlogs.

Following the launch of multi-video recording on the HONOR 50, HONOR identified another vlogging pain point based on deep consumer insights – the inability to capture the overall environment and spotlight a specific person at the same time. Responding to the needs of consumers, HONOR introduced Solo Cut Vlog mode, an HONOR innovation enabling users to simultaneously produce a group video and a portrait vlog that spotlights a specific person.

Introducing Solo Cut Vlog mode

Honor 70Solo Cut Vlog mode is made possible thanks to Person Re-Identification Technology and Person Autofocus Tracking Technology. Unlike facial recognition, Person Re-Identification Technology identifies and analyzes over ten features of a person, such as their face, hair, clothes and posture, to recognize the subject being spotlighted. When the subject moves, Person Autofocus Tracking Technology conducts a real-time comparison of human features and intelligently tracks and focuses on the subject being spotlighted.

Solo Cut Vlog Mode can produce two 1080P high-definition videos with a 30fps frame rate simultaneously. In order to produce these videos, a series of advanced algorithms, including human detection, tracking, recognition, autofocus cropping, Dual Beauty Effect and Dual Image Stabilization were added to the Dual Video recording feature of the HONOR 70 5G. Those can pose a huge challenge to the AI capabilities of both the image signal processor (ISP) and the system-on-chip (SoC).

Thanks to enhancements in AI and HONOR’s innovative solutions, Solo Cut Vlog mode has been designed to enable a series of pioneering advancements in AI recognition and tracking technology. With Person Re-Identification Technology and Person Autofocus Tracking Technology, the HONOR 70 5G boasts remarkable recognition capabilities. In addition to recognizing the target subject during video recording, the AI-powered feature can continue tracking after the subject leaves and returns to the frame.

To develop this, over 280,000 pieces of labelled data were used in standard AI training. To match the complex user scenarios, the image data covers different illuminance levels, distances and environmental conditions, and difficult samples are selected through active learning. Data expansion and enhancement for specific scenarios increase the detection and recognition capabilities of algorithms, resulting in a much higher training efficiency than the industry average.

The HONOR 70 5G can produce dual 1080P video content with beauty effects in Solo Cut Vlog mode. With algorithms for human detection, tracking, recognition, autofocus cropping and Dual Beauty Effect, Solo Cut Vlog mode can pose a huge challenge to the computing capabilities of the chipset’s ISP and AI sub-systems, which requires around 1.5 times computing capabilities at peak when compared to regular 4K video recording, and about double computing capabilities at peak when compared to regular 1080p video recording.

To overcome this challenge, HONOR adopted various load balance solutions by allocating the CPU/GPU/AI/ISP computing load on the SoC to the Qualcomm DSP/HTP processor, resulting in higher performance per watt. While ensuring image quality, the HONOR 70 5G effectively controls the power consumption of video recording, delivering an exceptional shooting experience.
