Batman, Hogwarts and Dune – The 6 best announcements from Gamescom

Gamescom

Over the last week, we’ve been treated to a slew of videogame news, courtesy of Gamescom. There was no shortage of videogame announcements and release dates over the five-day event, which had its final day on Sunday. If you were lucky enough to attend in the flesh, we detest you a little more than anyone else. If you weren’t in Germany over the weekend, it’s possible some of the best announcements and release dates slipped through the cracks. That’s why we’re here. To show you the best Gamescom had to offer.

Sony has us all on Edge

First up is the DualSense Edge. This is Sony’s first official in-house pro controller, and it looks stunning. As you can probably imagine, the DualSense Edge has tonnes of customizable features, like user profiles, tweakable dead zones, and plenty more settings to dig into. We’re still waiting on Sony to announce a price and release date, though we can make a few assumptions here. Xbox’s own Elite Series 2 controller costs a whopping R4,500 – a price Sony may try and reflect.

Here’s a trailer showing off the controller’s curvy… edges. Sorry.

Ironically, Dead Island 2 is crawling out of its grave

Yes, it’s real. Dead Island 2 is officially hitting consoles in February of 2023. The game has undergone a massive rebuild according to Dambuster Studios. The new developer spent the last four years building it from the ground up. Hopefully that makes up for the… what? Eight-year delay? The game is coming to both the current and previous generations of console.

We also got a shiny trailer for this one too, which you can check out above. Maybe keep the young’uns away for this one.

How you Dune?

Dune Awakening is an upcoming open-world MMO that wants to show off some of the best-looking sand you’ve ever seen. And it’ll probably deliver. Players will be given the ability to explore Arrakis, fight Sandworms, and get their hands on spice. We think. There’s actually not much to know about Dune Awakening yet. There is a trailer, though it offers us nothing more than a pre-rendered cutscene. A beautiful cutscene, no doubt. But pre-rendered nonetheless. There’s no release date, though we know it’s landing on the current generation of consoles. Eventually. Only the Emperor Leto II knows exactly when. The rest of us will have to wait.

Hogwarts Legacy

Unfortunately, Hogwarts Legacy has been delayed. But that’s because God of War: Ragnarök chose its release date, and everyone else scampered away to avoid colliding with it. Still, the delay isn’t long. It’s slated for February next year, rather than the holiday season it was aiming for. We got a new trailer too, focusing specifically on the Dark Arts. We meet Sebastian Sallow, a Slytherin student who can befriend the game’s main character and lead you down a path similar to that of He Who Must Not Be Named. It’s a glimpse of how simple decisions will lead the game down completely different paths each time around. Should make for some fun replays.

Sonic Breath of the Wild Frontiers

Sonic Frontiers is an open-world Sonic game. And it’s releasing soon. Real soon. 8 November to be exact. And what else is releasing in November? That’s right, God of War Ragnarök. The failure to delay the game is telling. Sega either believes it will be the best title of 2022 and isn’t afraid of the competition or… they aren’t confident in its selling ability from the get-go. We believe it’s the latter. We did get a trailer showcasing the story and a few more gameplay elements. We’ll wait to play it before judging too harshly.

Gotham 4 Knights Early

Gamescom has treated us to a DJ Khaled trailer for Gotham Knights. Yes, another one. Sorry, sorry… This time, the footage features villains we’ll see throughout the game such as Harley Quinn, Mr. Freeze, and more. We aren’t here to type out the entirety of the Batman villain roster. Just watch the trailer like we had to. There was some good news with the trailer too. No, it hasn’t been cancelled, it’s being released earlier than we expected. Four days early to be exact. You’ll be Batfamming in Gotham Knights by 21 October.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum

We’re going to be honest. No news about Gollum was provided at this year’s Gamescom. And perhaps that’s for the best. We were sort of hoping its cancellation would be announced, though no such luck. If you think we’re being too mean, watch this. Come back when you’re ready to apologize. We’ll welcome you back to the group with open arms.
