Stating the obvious: Microsoft admits that the PS4 significantly outsold the Xbox One

Hold onto your hats folks, we’ve got a real bombshell today. During the last generation’s ‘console war’, the PS4 outsold the Xbox One. Officially. Nearly two years after the release of the current generation’s consoles, Microsoft has finally released final sale figures for its Xbox One… seven years after it stopped releasing the figures. Once all was said and done, the PlayStation 4 doubled the sales of the Xbox One, and then some.

Xbox down for the count

The Xbox One had a slightly marred launch, priced at $100 more than its biggest competitor. This sent many buyers Sony’s way. In 2016, Microsoft stopped reporting sales figures, switching focus to Xbox Live numbers. Since then, we’ve had no idea just how behind in sales the Xbox One really was.

Microsoft recently submitted documents to Brazil’s national competition regulator, which offered an indication of how sales went all those years ago. No specific numbers were mentioned, but there’s enough detail for an educated guess.

“Sony has surpassed Microsoft in terms of console sales and installed base, having sold more than twice as many Xboxes in the last generation,” Microsoft said, in a Portuguese translation.

Based on Sony’s count, the PlayStation 4 sold as many as 117.2 million. Sony stopped counting in March 2022, leaving with a number that’s relatively unchanged. From this, we can assume that the Xbox One sold fewer than 58.5 million consoles. This leaves Xbox in third place in a two-horse race. Nintendo’s Switch is still selling and selling well. 111 million Switches are out in the world, with the number still climbing. There’s a chance the Switch could pass the PS4’s total sales before 2022 wraps up.

This time around, Xbox appears to be performing better with its Series X and S models. After a slow start for the PS5 due to lack of availability, sales numbers between the two are on par. For now. There’s still time for Nintendo to release the Switch 2 and ambush the market.
