Google Meet adds auto-transcription tool for educators

Although most kids are back in the classroom, that hasn’t stopped Google from creating a better online learning experience.

Meet easier with Google

Google Meet has rolled out an automatic transcription feature for educators signed up to Google’s Workspace for Education Plus and Teaching and Learning Upgrade plans.

According to The Verge, the transcribed text-based documents should take up less space than a full recording. Especially for teachers or lecturers wishing to store or share their past lessons. It may also make it easier to review and send lessons to students.

Google has also added polls and Q&A sessions for teachers who use Meet to live stream their lessons, potentially increasing participation. These updates were available in standard meetings but were not available during livestreams.

The company has also expanded the reach of Meet livestreams by allowing schools to livestream events directly to YouTube. Previously, Workspace users had two options for creating livestreams. The first limited the audience to 500 people in the same organisation. The other increased that limit to 100,000 people but in the same Workspace. YouTube isn’t bound by Workspace or organisation limitations, so this update will allow livestreams to reach people outside of those.

ChromeOS update here to help

As well as updates to Meet, Google has updated its Screencast app. Already baked into ChromeOS update M103, the tool gives teachers trimming, transcribing and sharing capabilities for their on-screen lessons. The app also allows students to rewatch previous lessons or create their own versions with the screen-recording tool. Perfect for the days when getting out of bed is difficult.
