iOS 16 will apparently bring always-on capabilities to the iPhone 14’s lock screen

Apple Inc’s Worldwide Developer’s Conference, also known as WWDC, starts on 6 June. The event showcases the new features from Apple’s software, so there are usually a few surprises. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, in his latest Power On newsletter, has some interesting info regarding iOS 16.

According to Gurman, Apple’s upcoming iOS 16 will likely upgrade the iPhone’s lock screen, health apps, and a ton of other features. Gurman claims that there are “…major enhancements for the lock screen, including wallpapers that have widget-like capabilities” in store.

Gurman said iOS 16 will (finally) support an always-on lock screen. The journalist says that the always-on display mode is an exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models. The function will show users notifications without fully awakening the screen, which should help save on battery power. Apple will probably play it off as a massive innovation, as if loads of Android phones don’t already have the feature.

Previous predictions

He also restates previous predictions. Enhancements to the OS are coming, in the form of windowing. This would most likely allow Apple users to resize app windows. Gurman also predicts more social media-like updates within Messages.

Alongside the iOS 16-powered always-on display feature, the rumoured iPhone 14 Pro  and iPhone 14 Pro Max are expected to have Apple’s A16 Bionic chip, and the ability to send emergency texts over satellite networks. Whether that will work here is very debatable, at least for now. Also due is a new front-facing cam and a 48MP rear camera, according to rumour. But that massive megapixel count doesn’t sound a whole lot like Apple. The company tends to keep that number smaller while still delivering impressive performance.

We’ll find out next week at WWDC what Apple has in store for us. iPhone 14 specs probably aren’t on the menu. iOS 16 details… probably are.
