The third-generation Formula E race car was officially revealed to the public yesterday in Monaco by Formula E and the Fedration Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). It was presented ahead of this weekend’s Monaco EPrix and will be introduced in the upcoming 2023 season.

Gen3 difference
The all-electric Gen3 is the world’s first race car designed especially for street racing. The Gen3 is also the first-ever Formula car with both front and rear powertrains to race internationally. This doubles the power output of the previous generation, for a total of 600kW in the Gen3.
The new car will also feature no rear hydraulic brakes because the new front 250kW powertrain will, along with the rear, increase the car’s regenerative capability. In addition, the pit is being fitted with 600kW charge capability. That’s a very speedy top-up. Hopefully the tech makes it to less stressful charging situations, like charging a standard EV.
The Gen3 weighs in at 760kg, not including the weight of the driver. The total weight is 840kg, as the maximum driver weight in Formula E is 80 kilos. It’s also the fastest Formula E car yet, capable of a top speed of over 320kph. Combined the torque that EVs naturally display, racing one should be one heck of an experience.
Sustainable speed
Sustainability is also a key focus of the Gen3. The FIA claims that all batteries will be reused and recycled at the end of their lifetime. Large parts of the car will be made from material from Gen2 vehicles. This includes recycled carbon fibre, while linen from older vehicles is also being repurposed. Gen3’s tyres will be made of 26% natural rubber and recycled fibres. These will also be recycled once race day is over.
FIA president Mohamed Ben Sulayem said the upgraded design establishes new standards, “…both technologically and environmentally.”
“Together with the FIA, we are proud to reveal the Gen3 to Formula E fans and demonstrate to the wider sports industry how elite sport, high performance and sustainability can successfully co-exist in the Formula E World Championship. We cannot wait to see how our teams and drivers push the car to its limit in 2023,” said Formula E CEO Jamie Reigle.
