South Africa’s largest integrated energy and chemical company, Sasol, has launched a customer rewards programme that’ll award users that sign up with points. Where have we seen this before? Oh right, literally everywhere else. Thanks for joining the conversation, Sasol.

Customers can redeem Sasol’s points against their fuel purchases or for a garage pie and a Red Bull at 2 AM, depending on how your night went, at a participating Sasol retail convenience centre.

Another loyalty card to fatten your wallet

Sasol’s vice president of marketing, Palesa Mokaba, said that its rewards programme aims to “…excite its customers with a personalised experience as well as new and differentiated offers.”

Your guess is as good as ours as to what those ‘differentiated offers’ will look like. Perhaps it just means a different choccy will be on special each week. It also says it’ll include digital offerings for loyal customers, who definitely aren’t just stopping at the nearest petrol station.

This does mean collecting another loyalty card, unless you live in 2022 and keep your cards on your smartphone.

It seems Sasol’s points are valued at a cent each. For the launch period, 14 April – 30 June 2022, customers who swipe their rewards cards will receive 30 whole points per litre of fuel purchased. Wow.

The company doesn’t say so outright but the number of points you get from fuel purchases will decrease after the launch period. But if you want those points you need to register for the programme. First, you’ll need a card, which you can get at any Sasol garage. Then you register by scanning the QR code on your card, or by heading to the Sasol rewards website. It’s also possible to register via WhatsApp on 0860 355 444.

As easy as it is to make fun of yet another rewards program, this one might actually be useful if the price of petrol continues its upward trend. Or you’ll put the card in your wallet and promptly forget about it forever. Either is a possible outcome.
