Sony launches side-plates for the PlayStation 5 you don’t have

Sony’s latest generation of gaming console has officially been out in the world for more than a year. We’re entering its second festive season, which would mean that all the PlayStation fans out there have likely bagged one by now. Sadly, it’s still out of stock. But you can buy these fancy coloured side-plates for it now, if that’s any consolation.

The company was quick to strategically remove all third-party side-plate sellers in the market before launching its own line of console covers in five different colours. The colours mimic some of the colours we saw on the official DualSense controllers launched earlier this year.

Finally, a customisable PlayStation

They’re reminiscent of the galaxy-esque theme Sony’s going for, offering Midnight Black, Cosmic Red, Nova Pink, Starlight Blue and Galactic Purple options. Those black plates by themselves would likely carry all of the company’s plate sales, honestly. They’re pretty sleek.

“Simply remove your original white PS5 console covers and click your new ones into place,” the company said, according to Engadget. “The PS5 console covers will be available for both the PS5 with the Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive and the PS5 Digital Edition.”

Remember the DualSense controllers in Cosmic Red and Midnight Black announced earlier this year? You’ll get those in the newly unveiled colours as well – so you can match your  console to your controller. Or not. We’re not judging.

These covers will retail for $55 – converted to around R900 at the time of writing. Which means they’ll probably be sold locally for around R1,200. Local availability isn’t clear yet, but we’re sure distributors will announce it in coming weeks. The new DualSense colours are already available for pre-order from Nexus Hub for R1,500.
