The upcoming Marvel’s Avengers game from Square Enix would make Thanos quiver

One of the most anticipated games at this year’s E3 conference was the secret ‘Project Avengers’ developed by Square Enix. In 2017, Square Enix signed a multi-year development deal with Marvel, and this is the first game from that deal. Square Enix’s E3 keynote unveiled Marvel’s Avengers and it looks incredible.

The new Avengers title takes place in San Francisco where the heroes plan to open their West Coast Headquarters. Unfortunately, (and expectedly) the situation takes a turn for the worst and it’s up to you to clean up the mess. Players will be able to play either story mode or solo mode — which allows for up to three co-op partners. The game also features some of the best voice talent in the biz, including Troy Baker (Joe from The Last of Us) who voices Tony Stark, Nolan North (aka Nathan Drake) who voices Thor, and Laura Bailey who voices Black Widow.

Along with Square Enix, the game is developed by Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics and the Deus Ex studio Eidos-Montreal. The developers have assured players that the game will not include loot boxes or pay-to-win scenarios and will continuously expand the roster of playable heroes.

The games we play

Our biggest worry about Marvel’s Avengers is controlling a diverse set of heroes. The reveal video above gives us enough hints as to how gameplay will work that we’re not especially stressed out yet, though we’re certainly keen on seeing a whole lot more gameplay.

We’re also pleased that Square Enix have opted to make the characters their own, rather than straight-up copying the Avengers from the MCU. Though, there are more than a few callbacks to scenes in the film series.

Marvel’s Avengers will also launch on Google’s Stadia game streaming service in addition to PS4, PC and Xbox One. It’ll be available from 15 May 2020.
