The next PlayStation DualShock controller could have a touchscreen

Let’s be honest, the PlayStation DualShock 4 controllers are damn near perfect. But a recent patent filing in the US suggest the upcoming models might feature a touchscreen.

The patent was granted to Sony last month, and detailed a design that includes a touch-display where the touchpad is located on current models.

Rumours have suggested that the upcoming PS controllers might look something like the PS Vita’s — taking the Nintendo Switch route. But it looks like Sony is comfortable with the current controller design. It is the perfect companion for their powerful system at this stage.

A touchscreen will only give players more control from a distance, and it’s likely something that can be built into upcoming games. The display could function like a second screen — perfect for mini-maps and inventories. If you want to take your eyes off the actual display that is…

“A touchscreen defined along the top surface of the main body between the first extension and the second extension,” the patent abstract states pretty clearly.

While this sounds pretty rad, a figure in the patent seems to depict the existing DualShock 4 design, with its dimpled touch-sensitive pad. Something that could indicate the previous mention of a touchscreen was incorrect.

Whatever this means, we should note that patents don’t always turn into commercial products. It could be Sony’s way of making sure they can use the technology in the future if they want to.
