If you’ve decided to make your life all about cryptocurrency then there’s only one smartphone that you should be looking at — HTC’s Exodus 1. It’s a blockchain-based device that’s been built with cryptocurrency in mind. And, if you want to secure yours, you’ll have to lay down a little crypto of your own. HTC’s not taking cash for it just yet.
The Exodus 1 has a decent amount of specs, ensuring it’ll at least keep up with the competition. But really it’s the built-in Zion cryptocurrency wallet (HTC’s own creation), and the secure area (called a Secure Enclave) on the phone for private keys and virtual cash that HTC is keeping separate from Android for security reasons. That bit’ll eventually be used to secure whatever date you like, so those pre-post selfies will never get out into the world where people can see the real you.
The phone will be able to run decentralised apps on the blockchain and users will be able to recover lost keys via a system of trusted contacts with HTC’s Social Key Recovery feature.
If you like some specs with your security, the HTC Exodus 1 should deliver. There’s a 6in QHD+ display, a Snapdragon 845 processor, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage in the device. The 3,500mAh battery supports fast charging, there are dual cameras on the front and back (8MP + 8MP for the front, 12MP + 16MP for the rear) and the Exodus 1 comes packaged with HTC’s BoomSound audio and USonic active noise cancellation tech. And, in case you drop your Bitcoin wallet/smart device into a toilet, the Exodus 1 also has an IP68 rating.
The device is currently available for pre-order, if you have some Bitcoin (0.15 of them) or Ethereum (4.78 of those suckers) to spare. In real money, it works out to around R14,000. International shipping and import duties may apply.
