If you’re going to subscribe to a gaming service these days, you might as well get something out of it besides just multiplayer access — that seems to be the thinking of both Microsoft and Sony. We’ve already seen what the Xbox team has to offer for this month, now let’s check out what the PlayStation fans have awaiting them for June 2018.
And honestly, PlayStation Plus subscribers are getting the better deal this month. There are three solid games up for grabs, as well as one absolutely stellar option. The only folks who are in for any kind of disappointment are those who still have their PS Vita in a death-grip. Sorry folks, there are slim pickings there this month.

XCOM 2 (PS4)
If there’s only one game that you download and play for free this June, make it XCOM 2. The original XCOM, a reboot of a far earlier PC strategy game, was brilliant. XCOM 2 took the very minor things that were wrong with that initial effort and fixed ’em, leaving us with this tense isometric strategy title that will leave you on the edge of your seat more often than a Twitch stream of the last two PUBG players swinging pans in search of a chicken dinner. Take on the alien menace from your under-staffed, underground base and show them what humans are really made of. Try not to sob when you lose your favourite soldier. Are you ready, Commander?
Trials Fusion (PS4)
If you’ve played the Trials series of games, you’ll know that it involves motor cycles, obstacles, and a series of insane stunts and skill which is supposed to take you from point A to point B without slamming your rider into point C at high speed. Trials Fusion is the same deal, only in the future. Expect flying platforms, glass and chrome, as well as an absolutely bonkers series of challenges. To turn up the madness levels, splurge on the cat-riding-a-unicorn Awesome Level MAX DLC.
Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier (PS3)
Before Ghost Recon Wildlands there was Future Soldier, a tactical game from 2012 that puts you in the shoes of some of the most advanced soldiers ever to drop a rifle in the dirt. Take control of part of a four-man team and play through the excellent campaign mode, grab a few mates for a spot of multiplayer or to show your skills in the co-op campaign. Or just tool around the battlefield trying to see what is the wildest kill you can get. Long story short, you’re going to travel the world using high-tech military gear in your mission to save the world. Or shoot friends in the face.
Zombie Driver HD Complete Edition (PS3)
The zombie apocalypse has arrived and it’s not safe to go outside. Unless, that is, you’re in a modded car covered in spikes, a jet boost, and a flamethrower. That’s Zombie Driver HD in a nutshell, with the Complete Edition throwing in all of the released DLC as well. Zoom around, over, and through hordes of zombies while you carry out missions for survivors. It’s basically The Transporter: Resident Evil Edition.
Squares (PS Vita)
There’s not too much excitement to be had in the Vita’s Squares. It’s a puzzle game that will test your ability to react and think, rather than just patiently thinking your way to the end of the problem. It’s not terribly exciting but it’s also free. What’re you gonna do?
Atomic Ninjas (PS Vita)
They’re small, they’re ninjas, they’re primarily multiplayer…? Atomic Ninjas will work fine in single player but plays best when you can match up against other human players — now you just need to find a handful of other folks with a Vita and get them into the same game. That’ll be easy, surely?
E3 Update: Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 (PS4)
So you’re a Call of Duty fan then, are you? Sony’s gone and made Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 free for PlayStation Plus subscribers for the month of June, on the off chance you somehow missed buying this one. If you’ve been on the fence about the Black Ops series, this is one way that you can get in without shelling out large amounts of cash. You’re likely to have more fun in the multiplayer than in the single player but that’s fine. Nothing like a little multiplayer fragging to make your weekend complete. The late addition is part of a Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 promotion for E3 — if you pre-order the upcoming game you’ll get your hands on Black Ops maps Summit, Slums, Firing Range and Jungle for Black Ops 3, immediately. The fan-favourite maps will appear remastered in Blops 4 at launch.
