Need some sneakers for your Sonic cosplay? Puma has you covered

The Sonic the Hedgehog fandom is one of the most maligned on the internet (look up some Sonic OC, if you’re feeling edgy) but even they deserve something nice now and again. Puma has a little gift for them, and regular sneaker fans who just happen to have some Sega nostalgia, in the shape of two pairs of Sonic-themed sneakers: the  RS-0 Sonic and the RS-0 Dr. Eggman.

The Sonic the Hedgehog influence is blindingly obvious, particularly in the RS-0 Sonic. The blue is inspired by the video game character, while the trim is based around the iconic Green Hill Zone that just about every gamer over a certain age will recognise. For those with some gaps in their gaming education:

The second pair is based around Dr. Robotnik (or Dr. Eggman, if you prefer), drawing from the industrial machinery that the series villain makes use of. The shiny red finish and yellow-and-black chevron accents are very specific to Dr. Eggman’s character design. The blue bits are… Sonic stomped underfoot, we guess?

These game-themed sneakers aren’t alone by a long shot. Most recently we’ve seen a pair of Nikes inspired by Sony’s PlayStation console which look… pretty sweet, actually.

We’re not expecting the Sonic sneakers to make a retail appearance in South Africa, but limited availability has never been an obstacle to dedicated sneaker collectors. The line will be launching in the States (and elsewhere) from 5 June this year and will cost $130 per pair (R1650). If a local outlet pops up with them in stock we’ll be sure to let you know where you can go (gotta go fast) to get a pair.

UPDATE: Puma South Africa has let us know that both the Sonic and Eggman RS-0 sneakers will become available in SA from late June. They will be available from Puma Select stores and from Shelflife at R3,000 a pair.
