Epic Games, the studio behind Fortnite Battle Royale, is going to be putting up a lot of cash for the upcoming esports season of the battle royale title.
How much cash? A cool $100 million, a number so high that we’re not even going to bother to translate it into rands. The cash is going to be for funding Fortnite prize pools for the upcoming 2018-2019 competitive season but the developer hasn’t said just how it’s going to be split just yet. We get the idea that the funds are going to be going to unusual places and not just to tournament winners.
The Fortnite team said in a blog post (which we checked several times to make sure we didn’t mistakenly see an extra zero somewhere) that “We’re getting behind competitive play in a big way, but our approach will be different – we plan to be more inclusive, and focused on the joy of playing and watching the game.” Make of that what you will.
Fortnite Battle Royale‘s huge cash injection is going to be getting detailed updates in the coming weeks, from eligible platforms to how competition is going to work. We’re hoping that they spread the love between the PC, consoles and mobile and give everyone from pros to streamers to casual players a crack at some prize money. It’s not like they don’t have the funds for it… And now if you’ll excuse us, we’ve got some Fortnite Battle Royale to practise play.
