Xiaomi teases Redmi 5, Redmi 5 Plus ahead of 7 December reveal

We’ve often had good things to say about Xiaomi’s range of smartphones because, well… they’re good phones, Brent. We’ve got no reason to expect anything different of the Redmi 5, the newest handset from the Chinese company.

The newly-teased Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus are going to be heading our way soon, so we might have reason to be excited. Maybe. That’s because we know what the phones look like, oddly, but know little about what they have inside. Usually it’s the other way around.

We know what the Redmi 5 pair look like thanks to a tweet from Xiaomi spokesman Donovan Sung showing off the devices. The company’s typical design notes are apparent but there are shades of Samsung’s newest too, particularly in the black handsets. Not too surprising, that, as most every phone looks the same this year — even Apple’s iPhone X looks more than a little like Samsung’s 2017 headliners.

We don’t have any specs, though. That’ll have to wait until the official unveiling in China on 7 December, which is also when we’re going to get some idea of the pricing. And pricing is the important thing, particularly here at home, but we’re not expecting to have to take out a loan for one. Historically the Redmi series of phones is quite affordable, especially for what you’re getting.

The odds that we’re going to see at least one of these two handsets in South Africa? Pretty good, actually. The range come in through Mobile in Africa, who have brought the last few headliners into South Africa. The December announcement is for China, however, so expect there to be a delay before it lands.
