Android O name, launch likely on 21 August

We’ve eaten the Nougat, we’ve sampled the Marshmallow, we’ve snacked on a whole batch of Android flavours so far and it’s Android O that we’ve got our sights on next. And our next taste will probably be soon.

Very soon, if prominent leaker Evan Blass is to be believed. According to Blass’ Twitter account, we’re going to see the release of Android O on the week of 21 August, with that date being the prime candidate for launch.

Which should also be when we find out which bit of confectionary is going to be lending its name to the operating system. Oreo seems to be a likely candidate, especially considering the past use of KitKat.

But don’t expect the launch to take place and your handset to be updated immediately afterwards. The August 2017 launch will revolve around Google’s own Pixel handsets being updated first, with Android O-sporting phones first being released with an out-of-the-box version of the OS in October or November this year. But you’re going to want it installed on your ‘droid when it becomes available.

Why? Several reasons. For a brief rundown of what to expect from Android O when it launches for more general use, check out our list of 8 features the updated OS will be bringing to phones.
