Using WhatsApp? You’re now one of a billion

We live in an interesting time, and not (just) the (allegedly) ancient Chinese curse kind. You, the person reading this now, regularly perform actions that are being done by vast numbers of others, on a scale unprecedented in human history. And now you’re doing another one.

Which is a fancy way of saying that very popular messaging app WhatsApp, which is owned by Facebook, has hit another milestone — this one topping a billion.

Not a billion users a month, they had that tied up some time ago. No, WhatsApp now boasts more than 1 billion users a day, according to an announcement from the company.

The number of users per month doesn’t climb much higher though. There are 1.3 billion monthly WhatsApp users, so there are obviously about 300 million people who aren’t as obsessive about checking messages as we are. The other billion, though…

They’re involved in sending a billion videos, 4.5 billion photos, and more than 5.5 billion messages a day. Not a month. A day. Like we said at the beginning, you’re a part of something that hasn’t been seen before in human history — barring some Ancient Aliens nonsense we have yet to discover. And you’re using it to share cat videos and Supernatural GIFs. We’re not going to judge though, that’s exactly what we’re using it for too.
