Stuff South Africa

In the July/Aug 2017 issue of Stuff Magazine

We love being the bearers of good news, and we’ve got a whole lot of it for you right here. For starters, we’re officially more than halfway through winter. Then there’s the fact that a different sort of winter is coming to screens near you — and us — in about a week (mmm, dragons). And last, but most importantly, the July/August 2017 issue of Stuff Magazine is now on shelves! Here’s a sneak peak at what you’ll find between its gloriously glossy covers.

Our cover star is the Nokia 3310, the phone that stole hearts, minds and headlines at Mobile World Congress earlier this year. Seriously, it was the most talked about phone of the annual everything-mobile shindig despite it’s 2MP camera, plastic build and lack of modern mobile phone conveniences (or essentials, if you ask us) like a touchscreen and Wi-Fi. If nothing else, it’s an inspired exercise in harnessing nostalgia for the halcyon days or yore when phones lasted a week (and your hangovers didn’t) to sell a hunk of circuit boards, silicon and liquid crystals today.

Apple made a slew of announcement at its WWDC event this year, so many in fact you’d be forgiven for missing most of them. Which is why we’ve collected the best of the show and summarised it for you, along with a first look at what we think is the most interesting news: the forthcoming Apple HomePod. It’s the first new Apple device since the Apple Watch, and even more excitingly, it’s the first digital-voice-assistant-in-a-speaker that we might actually get here in South Africa.

State capture is no laughing matter, and neither is choosing the tablet computer deserving of your cash. Which is why we’ve sat down with the new iPad, the iPad Pro 9.7, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S3 and Lenovo’s Yoga Book to work out which slates to capture. Do you need a stylus/pencil to chew or doodle with? How much processing power do you need a tablet to be able to leave your laptop at home and not regret it? Can you have it in blue? We cover these (and other) pressing questions.

Naturally, that’s not all. Oh no, there’s plenty more. From testing the DJI Spark and sifting through 4K content for the best shows and movies, to putting the Xbox One X through it’s paces and getting sweaty with the Garmin Fenix 5, there’s enough to keep your peepers busy through a week of lunch breaks (depending how fast you eat, slow down there buddy, chocking in the cafeteria is an ignoble death if ever there was one). Find this, and other things, in the July/August 2017 issue of Stuff Magazine, on-shelf now in all respectable purveyors of printed reading matter — and possibly a couple of dodgier ones.
