Grand Theft Auto V passes 75 million units shipped

Way back in February 2014 Grand Theft Auto V was doing extremely well. The game had sold over 32 million units, making it the best-selling title of 2013. That was no small feat back then but the game has proved to have legs. How long are these legs? Well, GTA V has now passed over 75 million units shipped.

These figures come from parent company Take-Two’s financial results for the third quarter of 2017 (which covers October to December 2016). In that period the company shipped more than 5 million copies of the title, with some 15 million being shipped over the past year.

Grand Theft Auto V has managed to extend its sales numbers primarily through the success of Grand Theft Auto Online, the (relatively) new online component of the sandbox titles that has players doing everything from executing massive stunts to pulling off digital heists for equally digital cash.

It has also helped that the game has been released more than once — the first time in September 2013 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and then again in November 2014 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. A third release took place, for the PC, in 2015, and Rockstar have been supporting the game’s online component with free updates ever since.

Rockstar has set the bar — now we want to see them replicate this success with Red Dead Redemption 2.
