Facebook tops 1.86 billion users, and other very large numbers

Facebook has been sitting on top of the social media pile for a very long time so it makes sense that there are some large numbers attached to the service. According to its Q4 2016 earnings report we can add a few very big numbers to the monthly users category — 1.86 billion people are using Facebook each month.

Of those 1.86 billion, 1.74 billion are using mobile devices to access the service. That tells us more about people’s attachment to their smartphones than it does about the company but it also means that Facebook is smiling all the way to the bank. All these users have resulted in revenue for the company of $8.8 billion and $3.56 billion in profits for Q4 2016.

In other numbers, the social network is seeing 1.23 billion users logging in daily (1.15 billion on mobile devices). WhatsApp has 1.2 billion daily users and those folks are sending around 50 billion messages on the service. A day.

Facebook as a whole (including Instagram, WhatsApp and FB Messenger) made almost $27 billion in 2016, an increase over 2015’s revenue of nearly 60%.

The company is looking to its video platform for future growth, as well as VR to a lesser (and associated) extent, though the Oculus Rift may not be that popular around the water cooler at present. Recently a court case between Facebook-owned Oculus and Zenimax has resulted in Zuckerberg’s company being on the hook for some $500 million in damages.
