If the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is anything like the Redmi Note 3 then we’re going to have to get us some of that. Or, to put it another way, we will be all but forced to consider discarding our current cellular devices is favour of this freshly-minted option.
As it happens, we now know more about what will be inside the Redmi Note 4 and the specs are looking more attractive than the last time we saw it (at the Chinese launch in 2016). For starters, there’s a change in processors and more storage/RAM configurations, plus we’ve got some idea how much it’ll cost outside of China.
Xiaomi are, in keeping with the Note moniker, fielding a slightly-curved 5.5in HD display and backing it with a Snapdragon 625 processor and an Adreno 506 GPU. That’s a change from the MediaTek Helio X20 ten-core processor which we were hoping to see in action.
There’s a 13MP (with OIS)/5MP rear-front camera combination to look forward to, dual SIM support (or a SIM and a microSD), a fingerprint sensor, and a 4,100mAh battery. This last point, Xiaomi said at the Indian reveal, should keep the handset going for two full days. We’ll just see about that (and we hope that the company is proved correct). Unusually, the phone will ship with Android 6.0 but users will be able to upgrade to Android 7.0 when the phone launches. That’s from a beta ROM, though, so it might be a better idea to hold off for the final upgrade.
Storage and RAM are going to vary, so users will have options to play with. The base handset will ship with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, which is as low as it gets. There has been a middle phone added, with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, and then the biggest Redmi Note 4 will arrive with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.
Pricing for the Redmi Note 4 is set to start at around $142 (roughly R2,000 in South African currency) for the 2GB RAM/32GB storage handset and climbing to around $190 (R2,690 or so) for the 4GB RAM/64GB storage version. Sadly there’s no telling which handsets we’ll get and what they will cost when the Redmi Note 4 lands here. At least, not at the moment. We’ll keep you posted.
