Say hello to Nokia’s first new Android (which is only on sale in China)

We’re not very far into 2017 yet and Nokia’s reentry into the Android marketplace has already happened. Rather, we know what it’s going to look like. The newest Nokia has been announced and detailed and while the Nokia 6 (as it is known) certainly looks all right we’re not going to be able to easily buy one.

That’s because the Nokia 6, which is a low-to-mid range smartphone, is going to be launching exclusively in China. That may be for the best, for the rest of us, as we’re most keen on any upcoming flagship models.

Still, we’ve been waiting to see what Nokia’s Androids are going to look like and the Nokia 6’s 5.5in aluminium unibody had better be an indicator of all of the future build quality. The handset looks solid, front and back, and the company is adding a curved-ish sort of display. It’s not Samsung-like at all but it’s something unusual, at least.

Android 7.0 Nougat was always going to be the OS of choice and the display is set to be an HD affair, backed by a Snapdragon 430 processor, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. They’re putting in dual amps and sound by Dolby Atmos, which should go well with the claimed (but not explained) graphics power and battery life for the phone. Cameras are going to be 16MP/8MP for the rear/front, making the 6 a decent entry point for buyers.

When the handset goes on sale in China a little later this year it’ll retail for the local equivalent of around R3,500. Which, if it ever launched here, is about where we’d like to see it priced. So there’s that.

If you want to get a closer look at the phone, hit up the official website. Us? We’re now on the lookout for something a little more global from Nokia. Roll on MWC 2017.
