Light Start: Razer Blade Pro, Kodak Ektra, Logan, and Breath of the Wild

Razer’s new Blade Pro crams desktop power (and a mechanical keyboard) into very little space

When you hear the name of gaming tech maker Razer’s Blade Pro, you’re kind of expecting a slim piece of hardware. And it is, measuring just 2.3cm thick. You might be thinking ‘So what? The MacBook Air is just 1.7cm thick.” And normally you’ve be right but the Air doesn’t pack in a Skylake quad processor, up to 32GB of RAM, up to 2TB of (SSD?!) storage, or an 8GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 GPU now does it? Nor does it have a 4K display. And it’s also missing what Razer is calling the world’s first low-profile mechanical keyboard. And it’s not (apparently) built by spider-robots from the future. But you know what, go back to your MacBook Air. Actually, you might have to. The Razer Blade Pro starts at R3,700 (R51,700). But still… that’s a lot of power for such a skinny machine.

If you’re hankering for something new from Kodak, we present to you the Kodak Ektra smartphone

Kodak has almost gone missing a few times in recent years but they keep on coming back. Right now they’re making smartphones and the next to hit the market is the Kodak Ektra, a camera-focused phone that… doesn’t have a very impressive camera. There’s a 21MP Sony sensor in the handset, along with phase detection autofocus, OIS and a f/2.0 lens. Not bad but nothing we haven’t seen before. Kodak seemed to be relying on their app for this one, as they’re integrating Snapseed and a whole mess of custom software. On the front is a 13MP selfie-cam because… yeah. As for the specs… a MediaTek Helio X20 has pride of place, along with 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage and a 5-inch HD screen. For a projected R8,000 or so (as priced in the UK), that’s… not too bad, right?

The third Wolverine film, Logan, is headed in an touchingly violent direction

As most South Africans probably should know, violence doesn’t solve much of anything. But if you’re the Wolverine, it’s usually the go-to when there’s an entire army of… whatever… trying to kill you. But the third standalone Wolverine film, now sporting an all-new R rating in the States (thanks Deadpool), is going to give us a very different look at Weapon X. In the new film, titled Logan, Wolverine is a much older man, Charles Xavier is pretty much ancient, and most of the mutants have passed on. Only… there’s a young girl who has a lot of Wolverine’s abilities (most likely she is X-23, a clone of Wolverine himself) and a whole mess of people are after her. We… like where this is going.

Life in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is looking gorgeously idyllic 

When when you’re lobbing exploding arrow at enemy encampments the open-wold instalment of The Legend of Zelda, subtitled Breath of the Wild, looks like a relaxing place to be. Perhaps it’s the backing music for the Japanese gameplay video that was released yesterday — right about the time that Nintendo finally revealed the details of their newest console (more on that later) — but we can see ourselves getting lost in exploring the world of Hyrule. Perhaps so much so that we wind up forgetting to save if for several hundred hours. And when you get to the final panning shot… damn this game looks pretty. We’re expecting it to launch in March next year. Right about the time that the Nintendo Switch comes out.
