Gwent fans: You’ll have to wait till October for your standalone fix

One of the biggest surprises in The Witcher 3 was Gwent, a fully-fledged collectible card game within the larger fantasy role-playing world inhabited by the game’s hero, Geralt of Rivia. Gwent proved so popular that developer CD Projekt has chosen to make a standalone title, Gwent: The Witcher Card Game, with a closed beta starting up soon.

Players will soon be able to do noting but play Gwent, against human or AI opponents, with a substantial story mode on the way as well as some multiplayer gameplay. But first there’s some testing taking place.

The test was supposed to kick off in September this year but the team behind the game has just announced a delay, to 25 October this year. They said “Unfortunately, we feel we need some extra time with the game before we hand it off to you for testing.”

The delay announcement went on to say that “We know we can make a first impression only once, and want to be sure everything is ready before we blast off. Delivering a good game is more important to us than keeping a deadline.”

This is a very similar line to the one taken by the company with The Witcher 3, which saw several delays before being released. If CD Projekt are taking time to give Gwent: The Witcher Card Game some extra polish then we’re going to be wowed when we do finally see it. It should still be playable at Gamescom in Germany so we’re looking forward to a few first impressions next week.

In the meantime, if you haven’t already signed up for the Gwent beta then head on over to the official website and do so now. October is not that far off.
