Want a verified Twitter account? Twitter is reopening the applications process

twitter

Trust in the modern age is a little blue tick. Not that kind of blue tick. Ew. Gross. No, we’re taking about the way that Twitter marks verified accounts so that you know you’re following or talking to the real deal instead of some impersonator with designs on your credit card number. And those Verified accounts are going to be spreading.

Twitter has announced that they’re opening up an applications process for users to have their accounts verified and get that pale-blue tick mark next to their name. Average Joe might have a rough time applying, however, as Twitter still seems to be maintaining that Verified accounts are for those accounts “…determined to be of public interest.”

So who qualifies? Twitter says that Verified accounts are typically for “…public figures and organizations in music, TV, film, fashion, government, politics, religion, journalism, media, sports, business, and other key interest areas” but you might be able to try your luck. The worst they can do is say ‘no’. And ban you and your account forever. But they’ll probably just decline if you’re not qualified.

Twitter’s vice president of User Services, Tina Bhatnagar, said “We want to make it even easier for people to find creators and influencers on Twitter so it makes sense for us to let people apply for verification. We hope opening up this application process results in more people finding great, high-quality accounts to follow, and for these creators and influencers to connect with a broader audience.”

It should be possible to request an account review now, if you’re up for taking the chance. The noise you just heard is every South African business sending their social media manager on a trip to this link in the hopes of securing that little blue tick mark. Global rollout should be this week so if the link isn’t active yet, it should be soon.
