The first smartphone toting the Snapdragon 821 is the Asus ZenFone 3 Deluxe

The first smartphone to use Qualcomm’s newly-announced Snapdragon 821, the bigger brother to the Snapdragon 820 found in Samsung’s Galaxy S7, among other phones, has been er… announced. And it’s coming from Asus. Specifically, the Asus ZenFone 3 Deluxe.

The name might seem familiar and there’s a good reason for that. The handset was announced at the end of May this year, packing the Snapdragon 820 and a laundry-list of high-end specs. Not much has changed on the latter point but Asus has also given its ZenFone 3 Deluxe a spec-bump by offering the Snapdragon 821 in addition to the 820.

That brings the Asus Zenfone 3 Deluxe’s specifications list to a Snapdragon 821, an Adreno 530 GPU, 6GB of RAM, and up to 256GB of storage. With some microSD on the side. The 5.7-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display, 3,000mAh battery, 23MP f/2.0 camera (with an 8MP front-facer) round out the rest of the USB C-supporting handset.

South African pricing and availability isn’t known yet. The handset has been priced for Taiwan so far, with the Snapdragon 821-toting version costing NT$24,990, or about R11,200. That’s not including any markup for a local launch so don’t take the price too seriously yet.

The Snapdragon 821 isn’t going to be exclusive to Asus’s new Zenfone, of course. The soon-to-be-confirmed Galaxy Note 7 is supposed to have a variant carrying the Qualcomm silicon, for one, and we’re expecting the chipset to arrive in other high-end handsets before the end of the year. This is just the tip of the speedy smartphone iceberg.
