The release of the Oculus Rift is the opening salvo in the consumer VR wars, with the HTC Vive coming next week and the PlayStation VR following in October. And Sony marked the occasion by dropping a huge tidbit about its headset.
In an interview with storied Japanese newspaper Nikkei, Sony Computer Entertainment executive vice president Masayasu Ito says that the company is considering making the PlayStation VR compatible with PC, as well. It’s only slated to work with PlayStation 4 at launch, but that could change down the line.
He says that since the console has similar “internal parts” as a common PC, the shared components could lend themselves well to PC compatibility for PlayStation VR. Right now, however, Sony is focused on bringing the headset to PlayStation 4 and developing VR games for the console.
Currently, Sony doesn’t have any sort of infrastructure for releasing games on PC, so that seems like a big project to tackle. But doing so would help the PlayStation VR compete directly with the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, particularly with the lower asking cost for the headset.
The PlayStation VR headset is due out in October for $399 (Between R6,000 and R7,000 here at home) for the headset itself, although you’ll also need the PlayStation 4 Camera, plus PlayStation Move remotes are needed for some games. Sony is also reportedly working on an enhanced “PlayStation 4.5” console, which will provide added GPU and processing power to deliver an improved VR experience.
