Samsung’s Gear VR will set you back R2k in South Africa

Samsung have just announced the Gear VR for South Africa, pricing the virtual reality unit locally at R1999 per headset. That’s the recommended pricing from Samsung, at any rate. Your merchant may vary.

Users will be able to pick the Gear VR, which is lighter than the older Innovator Edition by a claimed 22%, in Frost White. Samsung have been working on the touchpad interface and their Bluetooth gamepad also plays nice with the virtual reality headgear. But, before you go rushing out to get yours, you’ll need to have specific Samsung hardware in order to use the Gear VR.

The Gear VR launching today supports the Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 Edge+, Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge handsets from Samsung. Hardly a comprehensive list but it’s also a roll-call of their most powerful phones. What can we say, virtual reality needs a bit of grunt to work.

Samsung’s director of integrated mobility Craige Fleischer says, “Samsung has been at the forefront of delivering mobile excellence and the Gear VR Innovator Edition launched last year was no exception”.

“The world of Gear VR is all about the wow factor and bringing imagination to life,” he adds. “With such extensive content and improved design, we are delivering what our customers want: a fully immersive virtual reality experience.”
