Smartphone? PC? Same thing with the over-specced Symetium handset

Are phones all about the numbers for you? Not the phone numbers, nobody actually uses a smartphone to make calls any more. We only touch ours when they are in a pocket or something, otherwise they just connect to whichever speakers are in range at home or in the office and we interact with it that way. Oh, and apps.

But if specs are all you care about then the Symentium, a smartphone being crowd-funded by a startup from Sweden, will probably grab your attention pretty quickly. But that’s because they’re hoping to throw the (current) best of everything at a phone in the hopes that you’ll want one. To reel of a top-end specs list for the Symentium, it could have: a 5-inch OLED display, 6GB of RAM, 256GB of storage (and 128GB via microSD), a Snapdragon 820 processor, USB-C charging, IP67 certification, a 24MP camera, and Android 6.0.

Sounds too good to be true? It might be. In order for you to get your hands on one of these devices, they kinda have to hit that funding target. They’re not going small-scale, with their IndieGoGo campaign having a target of $1.25 million. To date they’ve managed a bit less than $60,000 but it’s early days yet.

You can definitely get in on the act, with a contribution of $699 (a little less than R10,000) securing you a 64GB Symentium phone, plus shipping. Or you could wait a little while and see what the established manufacturers have on the way. The Galaxy S7 almost certainly will have a 6GB RAM option…
