Google’s Android One program seems several companies contributing to low-cost smartphones that are intended for specific markets around the world – markets that might not have access to the phones otherwise. The latest place to get Android One access? Africa.
Google has announced that their Android One phones, with the first being the Infinix HOT 2, are now available at retail in Nigeria. In addition, prospective users in Nigeria, Egypt, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, and Morocco will be able to order the HOT 2 through online retailer Jumia.
The Infinix HOT 2 sports a MediaTek quad-core processor, 1GB or 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and dual cameras running on Android Lollipop. The 5-inch handset has a 720p display and an 8MP rear camera, with the whole dual SIM handset running on a 2,200mAh battery. The North African countries getting some Android One loving will be paying around R1,150 per handset.
The phone isn’t all they’re sending to Africa though. A YouTube feature is due later this year that will let users store videos to their devices offline for a limited period, effectively letting them watch YouTube in places that may not have signal or a speedy connection.
