Microsoft’s Cortana for Android leaks out early

We knew that Android was due to get Haloed up with Cortana at some point in the future, we just didn’t expect it to happen so soon. Microsoft has instituted an invitation-only beta for the digital assistant on Android, though the assessment locations are confined to the States and China for now, but that wasn’t enough for some users.

A Cortana APK has leaked over the weekend, letting users all over the place (with the correct user permissions) try out the assistant’s functions on Android devices earlier than Microsoft intended. The various hands-on previews that have been published since point out that Cortana for Android is incredibly similar to Cortana’s native Windows Phone environment.

Microsoft seems to be taking the leak well. The APK file popped up online from one of their Insider program tests and the company says that the beta, which is limited at the moment, will be opening up soon. In the meantime, watch out for our assessment of Cortana for Android in its current state which is on the way soon.
