Call of Duty: Black Ops III will hit Xbox 360, PS3 as well as next-gen

The majority of game publishers and developers are focusing their efforts on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, taking advantage of the improved processing power of the new consoles. It’s been a worry that one of gaming’s largest franchises, Call of Duty, would be taking the same tack but that is not the case.

Blops 3Publisher Activision have announced that the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 will, while being focused on the new consoles and the PC, also be making its way to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 4. They’ve also confirmed that the Wii U won’t be getting an instalment at all this year.

The console differences do mean that the game releases will be a little different. Activision says that “…the campaign mode on Xbox 360 and PS3 is currently in development with a goal of enabling two-player cooperative play, instead of the four-player cooperative campaign on next-gen. There will also be some other features and functionality built specifically for the new generation of consoles that cannot be supported on Xbox 360 and PS3.”

Just what those differences are will be explained at a later stage but for now gamers who haven’t made the switch to Xbox One or PS4 will still be able to get their annual run-and-gun fix. It’ll be interesting to see how Beenox and Mercenary Technology do with the series, neither developer has been involved in a Call of Duty to date.
