Brace yourself, Need for Speed reboot is coming – and it’s looking quite Underground

The Need for Speed series, it could be argued, was at its apex during the Most Wanted (the first one) and Underground era, where everyone wanted to mod their racing implements with lights that didn’t do much except look pretty when you hit the NOS key. You might wonder why the above sentence exists but it’s quite simple: Electronic Arts have announced that the Need for Speed series is getting a reboot. And, based on the teaser video (below), we are looking at a return to the Underground era of gameplay.

And the official announcement all but lays it to rest. The new game will be “…what the fans want, and what Need for Speed stands for – deep customisation, authentic urban car culture, a nocturnal open world, and an immersive narrative that pulls you through the game.”

So… story-based, customisation, urban car culture and it all takes place at night? Yeah, we’re getting another Underground game – even if the final name doesn’t say so outright.

We’re likely going to see more from this one and EA in the next couple of weeks, at E3 in Los Angeles, and you can expect it to launch towards the end of the year. It’ll be releasing on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 – sorry last-gen users.
