Microsoft has announced a pair of new mid-range Windows Phone devices, the Lumia 640 and 640 XL.
After a cheap mobile? Microsoft is putting its hat in the ring with two new models. As seems to be the trend these days, the Lumia 640 and 640 XL get you big screens without a big price.
The Lumia 640 has a 5-inch HD (720p we’d bet) screen, Snapdragon 400 CPU, 1GB of RAM and 8GB storage. Nothing too fancy, then, but enough to get by for most folk.
What’s different in the XL model? It has a bigger screen of course, netting you 5.7 inches instead of five.
They have different cameras too. The Lumia 640 has an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 1-megapixel selfie sensor on the front, while the XL gets the bump up to 13 megapixels.
But the important question: how much do they cost? We only have the Euro prices at present, but they give you a good idea. The Lumia 640 costs 139 Euro (R1,840), or 159 (just over R2,100) for the 4G version. There’s a small jump up to 189 (R2,500 – 3G) or 219 Euro (a little under R2,900 – 4G) if you fancy the bigger brother of the two.
As usual for Lumias, you can get the Lumia 640 and 640 XL in a bunch of colours including blue and orange, plus white and black if you like your phones a bit more bland-looking. You’ll be able to get hold of the phones around April this year. Thanks to this timing they’ll start off their lives with Windows 8.1, but should be high on the list for a Windows 10 upgrade later in the year.
