Watch the Northern Cape 1,000km/h desert comms test for the Bloodhound supersonic car

How do you test the communications system for a car that is expected (hopefully) hit speeds of 1,600km/h? It’s dangerous enough to take a vehicle like the Bloodhound with a jet engine into the desert, using it for a test isn’t the greatest idea you can have.

There is a solution that doesn’t mean endangering your supersonic vehicle and the team behind the Bloodhound SSC have just released a video showing what is the most extreme data connection test we’ve ever witnessed.

What they’ve done is take two road vehicles, the Jaguar F-TYPE R Coupé and a Jag XF, and fitted them out with the data equipment that is being tested and which will be used in the Bloodhound’s record-setting attempt later this year and in 2016. Also along for the ride is an L39 jet travelling at extremely low altitudes, making for a closing speed that topped 1,000km/h in order to simulate what the Bloodhound (and the data connection that will be keeping an eye on everything) will be going through in September this year.

Long story short, we have fast cars and jets doing crazy things while loaded with tech. And this is just the warm-up for something a lot more extreme. What more could you ask for?
