Catch the trailer for Neill Blomkamp’s newest sci-fi film, Chappie

A robot that is able to think and feel emotions is a near staple for science fiction and Chappie, the third sci-fi film for South African-born writer/director Neill Blomkamp is going to be giving the old trope a fresh coat of paint if the newly-released trailer is anything to go by.

Chappie will star Hugh Jackman as an Aussie, with Sigourney Weaver, Sharlto Copely (as the robot Chappie itself… himself? Either way, Chappie’s going to be learning a few things) as well as Di Antwoord’s Watkin Tudor Jones and Anri du Toit (or Ninja and Yolandi Visser, if you prefer) as themselves – because writing a couple of characters like that would be… unusual for motion picture writers. British-born Dev Patel, of Slumdog Millionaire fame, is also part of the lineup.

Based on the trailer below, Chappie is going to be far more District 9 and a whole lot less Elysium which is something we can all be happy about. But don’t just take our word for it. See for yourself.

Chappie is expected to release on 6 March next year.
