Yesterday, Satya Nadella, the newly-appointed CEO of Microsoft, announced that the tech giant will no longer be going forward with Nokia’s Android phones.
There have been some attempts, or variations on the idea of an Nokia Android smartphone in the past, namely the Nokia X, but it seems that the most recently announced device probably won’t see the light of day.
The plan from here on forward, and brace yourselves, is for the company to focus on their Windows phones. Nadella said “We plan to shift select Nokia X product designs to become Lumia products running Window. This builds on our success in the affordable smartphone space and aligns with our focus on Windows Universal Apps.”
This news was only the tail-end of a much broader announcement from the company, the majority of which focussing on Nadella’s announcement that Microsoft is planning to lay off as many as 18,000 employees across a large section of the company. Several other projects also face the chopping block.
Either way, the idea of a Nokia Android phone was good while it lasted, but Microsoft becoming a much leaner company will likely have more implications for the tech industry. As always, we’ll keep you updated.
