According to the Gmail blog, and pretty much anybody who’s ever used it, email has revolutionised the way we communicate on a daily basis. And even though the modern realm of communication is inundated with instant messaging apps, email still serves as the most widely accepted digital medium of getting your message to other people.
That is, if you don’t take into account the language barrier we all face in an ever global world, which is exactly the problem Gmail saw facing email.
Normally Gmail was available to users in 58 languages, but as from yesterday, that number rises to 71, which means that Gmail now offers its services to 94 percent of the world’s internet population.
Best of all, two of the newly included languages should make many a South African happy, as Afrikaans and isiZulu are on the list of newcomers. The other new languages included are Armenian, Azerbaijani (Azeri), Chinese (Hong Kong), French (Canada), Galician, Georgian, Khmer, Lao, Mongolian, Nepali, and Sinhala.
Gmail also has, according to their blog, incorporated all the new languages with help from linguists to ensure that mother-tongue speakers are not confused by inaccuracies.
