Developer NetherRealm and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment have revealed Mortal Kombat X, the next installment of the iconic fighting game which will be released to a blood-starved fan base in 2015. Along with the announcement of the game, which will be a “…fully-connected experience that launches players into a persistent online contest where every fight matters in a global battle for supremacy”, NetherRealm have also released a trailer that may or may not show off gameplay.

Behind our uncertainty is the fact that the footage you see above looks almost too good to be in-game, on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One at least. It’s basically a given that the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Mortal Kombat X won’t attain these sorts of visuals. But the side-on view point for much of the bout between SubZero and Scorpion, two of the series’ most recognisable characters, conforms to how we’ve expect much of the game to play out – hence we’re pretty sure this is gameplay, with a few camera tricks that might not appear in the final game.

Still, we’ll wait for confirmation before hopping up and down with our full excitement. Creator Ed Boon has pointed in the direction of the new trailer being actual gameplay though.

Boon said “Mortal Kombat has always been about over-the-top, visceral fighting and with Mortal Kombat X we wanted to utilise the power of new-gen consoles to give players our most intense game yet. The team has worked hard to make sure Mortal Kombat X delivers everything fans expect along with new characters, new game modes and an all new graphics engine.”
