If you’ve been itching to own Google Glass but never managed to get an invite or missed out on the strict 24-hour sale on 15 April, it’s time to get excited.
Google has extended the availability of its smart specs to anyone and everyone within the US, without a time limit (here comes the online queue). If you’re not in the US, you’re out of luck – unless you have an American friend who can pick a pair up for you.
Information on the Glass Google+ page shows that no invitation is required for anyone to purchase Glass, ahead of its wider consumer release.
“We’re still in the Explorer Program while we continue to improve our hardware and software, but starting today, anyone in the US can buy the Glass Explorer Edition, as long as we have it on hand,” it read.
The key words being, “as long as we have it on hand”, which for you means while stocks last.
PRICE IS KEY
Considering the price of other smart glasses, such as the Vuzix Smart Glasses M100 or the EyeTap, one would expect the Google Glass price to be, at most, in the three-digit bracket.
But for those of you who have been waiting for the price of Google Glass to take a dip, sorry, that’s not happening anytime soon. You still have to fork out a costly $1,500 for the eyewear.
The increasing competition does raise one important question about Google’s pricing strategy – will it release a cheaper alternative in the near future, or is this as good as it gets?
For those of you outside the US, congratulations, you now have ample time to persuade/beg/threaten someone to buy the Android-powered smart glasses for you. Assuming you have money to burn.
