Sony reveals PlayStation 4 VR headset in development – Project Morpheus

Sony has announced a project that they have designed with the PlayStation 4 in mind and it involves virtual reality on living-room consoles. The concept, called Project Morpheus, is still in development but the company has shown off a prototype of the VR headset that they hope to introduce to gamers.

Sony’s developer kit isn’t final but the company is planning on tracking the headset hundreds of times each second, using sensors inside the VR unit as well as tracking markers that the PlayStation Camera, which is already able to keep track of the PlayStation Move and the PS4 controller, will be able to read. A full 360 degrees of tracking rotation is planned, though the 1080p dev kit currently only have a quarter of that capability at the moment. The headset, which is unnamed at present, will connect to the PS4 – likely with a USB cable.

Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida said “Virtual Reality is the next innovation from PlayStation that may well change the future of games. Nothing elevates the level of immersion better than VR.”

Valve’s effort along these lines and the popularity of the Oculus Rift might have had some effect on Sony’s push to bring virtual reality to consoles, thought the company has been working on headsets for some time now. It could just be that the time of the VR headset has finally come.
