Google takes on cloud storage prices

Google has dramatically cut the costs of buying extra storage on Google Drive today, and it has done so in the usual Google fashion – brilliantly.

Google users still have access to the normal free 15GB of storage, but can now get 100GB for about R21.50 a month. The best price slash is the 1TB tier, which you can now rent for just under R108 a month, which is quite cheaper than the usual price of R540.

The usual benefits apply, in that any storage you get for Google Drive also goes towards the other Google services, including Gmail and Google+ photos.

In terms of the space you get, Google states that to fill the space, you would have “…to take a selfie twice a day for the next 200 years and still have room left over.”

The price slash undercuts Dropbox by a fair margin, as you have to pony up R108 for 100GB and R540 for 500GB. It should be interesting to see if the popular cloud storage company responds.

The price changes for Google are live, and you can go check it out here.

Also note that the prices are in US Dollar, and as such subject to change from the time of writing.
