Microsoft to give Windows XP a going-away present in the form of security updates

Microsoft is nearing the end of Windows XP’s life cycle, with support for the ageing operating system coming to an end on 8 April this year. Microsoft seems to be taking support for the OS down to the wire however, with a new batch of updates specifically for Windows XP and XP 64-bit due out today.

Digital Trends reports that the updates will apply to Windows XP Service Pack 3 and Windows XP 64-bit Service Pack 2 installations and that the updates are rated ‘critical’ or ‘important’ by the company.

Maximum PC says that a zero-day patch for Internet Explorer 9 and 10 is in the offing, as well a privilege issue which is to be addressed.  Another two of the expected five updates are “security mechanism bypasses”. But, since this almost certainly be the last lot of updates for Windows XP, it might be time to think of upgrading if you’re planning on keeping an XP machine on the internet.
