Nissan now has a Smart rear-view mirror, expected to debut in 2015

Every bit of tech in the world seems to be getting smarter and smarter, though we’re still waiting for a toaster that remembers your bread carbonisation preferences. Nissan have just revealed that they’re taking some new Smart tech to the Geneva Motor Show this year – a smart rear-view mirror that is able to switch between being a good ol’ standard mirror and an LCD monitor that shows drivers the view from the rear by way of a camera.

The idea behind Nissan’s Smart Rearview Mirror is that users will be able to view blind spots even when there is something in the way, like a passenger’s noggin or something outside the vehicle that is obstructing the driver’s checks. According to the company, “high-quality camera and image processing system implemented in the LCD monitor consistently results in a clear image with minimal glare, even during sunrise or sunset conditions or when being followed by a vehicle with strong headlights.” This means that you’ll never have to use the LuxBlaster.

Drivers must, at present, switch between the mirror function and a camera view by using a switch on the bottom of the mirror, though we’d be very surprised if Nissan opted to not implement a switch on the center console or steering wheel instead when it goes into global production in 2015. Nissan will be showing off the new rear view mirror at the Geneva Motor Show this year and it will be making its first appearance in the market in Japan in 2014.
