Nokia unveils Android-based Nokia X, X+ and Xl at MWC 2014

Nokia’s X smartphone is indeed a thing and it has brought friends to the announcement at Mobile World Congress this year. The Finnish phone manufacturer took the veil off the long-rumoured Android-based smartphone as well as a couple of surprise additions in the Nokia X+ and Nokia XL handsets.

The Nokia X is the budget contender in a whole list of budget devices which feature Android app support, either through Nokia’s Store, third-party app stores or by sideloading the app in question on the device. The X has a 4-inch touchscreen, 1GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor and 512MB of system memory with 4GB of storage out of the box. The touchscreen display has a resolution of 800 x 480, the device features a 3MP camera and the whole lot is powered by a 1,500mAh battery running on the “Nokia X software platform”. So it’s not the Android you remember, though The Verge reports that Nokia is making use of Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean for the devices.

The Nokia X+ is a near-carbon copy of the X, with upgrades in the RAM department (768MB versus 512MB) and an included 4GB microSD card setting it apart. The Nokia XL is also an incremental upgrade of the X, with a 5-inch display at the same resolution, 768MB of RAM (without the microSD addition for storage) and a 2,000mAh camera making up the majority of the differences. Nokia have also included a 2MP front-facing camera and a 5MP rear shooter with the XL.
