Sony introduces the Xperia Z1

It’s here. Sony’s newest and prettiest smartphone has been revealed at IFA 2013, and we’ve got to tell you, it’s looking good.

First things first, the innards of the beast. The Xperia Z1 has a 5-inch, full HD (1080p) display, armored in an one-piece aluminum housing. Inside broods a 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 chipset, with 2GB of RAM and 16GB onboard memory that you can expand via microSD.

And then, the pièce de résistance: The Xperia Z1 has a 20.7-megapixel, F2.0 camera that, along with a more conventional 2-megapixel camera on the front is made safe from a watery grave with its IP58 level certification. Well, it’s safe from doom as long as it doesn’t dive deeper than 1.5 meters for longer than 30 minutes.

Complementing the Xperia Z1’s camera is a host of camera apps that promise to only improve your underwater photography adventures. For example the Info-eye app will give you related information on photographed landmarks and other items like books or wine, and the Timeshift burst app enables the Xperia Z1 to take 61 images in 2 seconds.

So the Z1 is looking to be a great smartphone, and if this is the way things are going, IFA 2013 is starting to look like a doozy.
