MakerBot’s Digitizer is now up for pre-order

You might recall that MakerBot, earlier this year, detailed a desktop scanner which can be used to scan existing objects for later 3D printing. Since March MakerBot has been bought up by Stratasys and now the MakerBot Digitizer is suddenly available for pre-order.

The Digitizer is available for pre-order, with an expected shipping date of October this year, for $1,400. There is an optional extra cost of $150 for MakerCare, a service and support program from the company. For that chunk of change, R16,000 or so in local currency, MakerBot promises watertight 3D design files in a matter of minutes from the scanner, without the need for CAD or any other design skills.

MakerBot CEO Bre Pettis said in a statement “We believe that the MakerBot Digitizer Desktop 3D Scanner is an innovative technological breakthrough that sets the standard for affordable desktop 3D scanning. We focused on making the MakerBot Digitizer super easy to use, intuitive and simple. The MakerBot Digitizer is powered by MakerBot MakerWare software, and we plan to offer in the future additional software updates that are expected to add even more features and capabilities.
